School Scientists Contribute to the Book “Vertebrate Fossils from Louisiana”

A new book, “Vertebrate Fossils from Louisiana,” has just been published through Louisiana State University.  This important work was undertaken in honor of the late Dr. Judith Schiebout, who spent her career as the vertebrate paleontologist at LSU.  Her long career spurred many diverse interests and students in the geological and paleontological sciences.

The book represents contributions from many of her colleagues, friends, and students from across the country.  Three of those colleagues from the University of Louisiana, Lafayette, collaborated with other researchers from Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas resulting in a paper concerning the first marine reptiles (mosasaurs) from Louisiana, a Paleocene mammal found in a drill core, and evidence of the meteorite impact that caused the extinction of the dinosaurs.

The authors from the School of Geosciences at UL include Dr. Jennifer Hargrave, Director of the UL Lafayette Science Museum, Dr. Gary Kinsland, Professor Emeritus, and Dr. James E. Martin, Research Professor and Curator of Paleontology.
